Burke and wills tree

Burke and wills tree
It’s Day 10 and now we are set for a day of exploring this beautiful town and its surroundings. At this location we can call in support if one of the bikes needs attention, or if we need to replace anything from our stores. Birdsville is the gateway to so many cool places and great things to see, so let’s go exploring. Located in the town near the river, is the Burke and Wills Tree. This is another blazed tree with the markings of the Burke and Wills expedition. This is a must as we leave our tents and camp behind at the caravan park and ride our bikes without all the stores and packs..

After paying our respects at the Burke and Wills Tree, its time for something good to eat, so over to the world famous Birdsville Bakery we go, to try the legendary Camel Curried Pies. These are all locally made, and lots of love and care goes into each one. What a great change it will be from eating boiled veggies and rice huh?

Big Red

Big Red
40klm away from Birdsville towards the west we enter the Simpson Desert. It’s time to meet the giant sand dune, the king of kings.. BIG RED. Now this sand dune has eaten up many a travelers and their vehicles. It quickly zaps momentum from any moving object trying to climb it and its become the Mecca of 4X4 drivers and motorbike riders.. If you beat Big Red, you have beaten the Simpson Desert. Now the rule is, you get ONE GO, and during this attempt you need to get your motorbike up without being bogged down and needing to back down. Can it be done? We’ll have to see when we meet the Big Red. ( On a personal note, I won’t be taking on Big Red, as I can’t personally see the reward of stressing my bike out and possibly breaking ME or something on my Yamaha, but I’m happy to watch others go try )

If these guys can do it, we'll do it too. We are BETTER MEN! hahahaha ( Oh and WOMEN! once again, Sam I haven't forgotten you ).

Now I'm told Birdsville council has placed this young woman at the top of Big Red, and her job is to offer us cold drinks and a back rub after a stressful ride up Big Red. It's all completely paid for by the local council, and I think thats terrific! why don't they do this in Kakadu?
